How to let go - simplified - with Ben Mailo

Gifts from the Edge Podcast

October 30, 2023

Hey my friends! I'm so glad you're here today and reading this right now, because I truly believe that this is a word in season. The 'letting go' concept is a simple but powerful idea that can be applied in just about any setting you can think of - and I've been doing it myself since chatting with Ben - and it is actually making a big difference!

Now, I'll admit, when I first heard the concept I thought that it was all about finding the easy way - which if you know me, if kind of the opposite of what I preach - right?

I am all about growth mindset, and seeking to improve, and setting goals, and working hard to achieve them, of living your own hero's story! 👊 - and so 'letting go' - to me, at first, just sounded like the 'refusal of the call' - the natural first response of anyone when they encounter resistance... and I thought, this isn't for me - but then 2 things made me reconsider...

1) I respect Ben a lot. I've known Ben and his family for many, many years, and I've always recognised in Ben a kindred spirit - an overthinker perhaps - like myself 😊 - a high intrapersonal intelligence which I'm sure (like me and you) has been both a blessing and a curse - right?

And 2) it was also the timing. I've mentioned in recent episodes, how through my Soul Care journey, I've recognised a destructive sub-conscious pattern - that work, succeeding, and high performance have all been (incorrectly) linked to my perception of VALUE - that is, I believed the lie, that if I work hard, do well and succeed, then I have value (sound familiar?)

And so I was curious to learn more - and I thought, why not share this process of discovery along with my friends and community ❤️

In this episode Ben's going to unpack the Letting Go concept, and I think you'll agree in the end - that although he's broken it down and made it really simple - that this is not escapism - it's not being lazy or pursuing 'peace' at all costs. It's actually a key to high performance - but from a healthy place - a state of acceptance and love - not trying to prove your worth.

I think you're going to like it.

Note for believers:

I know that one of the obstacles to this idea is some of the New Age references that Ben makes in the interview - and so for my Christ-centred friends, I thought I might include some of the words of Jesus here too to round out the message...

  • Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own (Mt 6:24-27,34)

  • Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you. (1Peter 5:7)

  • For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11)

  • Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God (Philippians 4:6)
