Finding Peace in Unexpected Places - with Zach Muetterties (Part 2)

6th November, 2024

Welcome back to Part 2 of our conversation with Zach Muetterties, a true peace broker whose approach to healing in some of the world’s most challenging environments is nothing short of amazing!

"I wasn’t looking for this work. In fact, I was initially the very opposite of peaceful. Yet, here I am, standing beside people in communities I once considered my enemy."

(Zach Muetterties)

In Part 1, we heard about Zach’s work with Equal Access International and Youth With A Mission (YWAM), where he shared the power of simply “listening more than he talks.” His unique approach emphasises the importance of being present and setting aside agendas, which allows for genuine human connection and healing.

In this second part, Zach dives deeper into his journey and the unconventional methods he employs to create peace where it often feels impossible. If you haven’t caught Part 1, I highly recommend going back to it first, as it sets the foundation for the powerful insights Zach shares here.

LISTEN NOW:

Zach’s path to becoming a peace advocate is truly inspiring. By choosing to lead with listening, he fosters conversations that are not driven by agendas or personal goals, but genuine care. Zach calls it a pure heart. In these spaces, he helps uncover a sense of unity and kinship that transcends traditional ethnic and cultural boundaries.

This episode brings out a profound message: if true peace is to be achieved, it must begin with letting go of preconceptions and meeting people where they are at - just as they are.

Throughout our conversation, Zach described the courage required to go to these “edge” places—regions often dismissed as hopeless. Ironically, it’s from these places that some of the most powerful messages of forgiveness and reconciliation can be found. As Zach says, it’s the bravery of those willing to risk everything for peace that leaves a lasting impact on him and those around them.

Zach’s approach reminds me of a principle I mention in my book, Thrive by Design: Your Guide to Abundant Living. Often, we come to situations with a rigid goal, but as Zach illustrates, releasing our agendas can create space for outcomes far greater than we imagined.
