I recently had the pleasure of welcoming Cheryl Ward, co-organiser of the upcoming Groundswell Conference in Melbourne, to my podcast. What unfolded was an incredible conversation that delved into her spiritual and humanitarian journey, a powerful narrative of faith, purpose, and a life dedicated to living in intimate communion with God and serving humanity.
From Educator to Humanitarian
Cheryl's story, as she shared with me, begins in Coffs Harbour, Australia. She's been an educator in creative and performing arts since 1983, a passion she still holds dear. However, an even deeper spiritual hunger led her down a "mystical path" focused on an intimate relationship with the Trinity, which she believes has taught her that each of us is powerful in Christ. This journey, she emphasised, is unique to her and does not require others to think identically.
Her passion was ignited by the sobering reality of child trafficking, a concern that took root in her heart in her 20s and 30s. Feeling a divine call to act beyond just financial donations, she was led to Haiti following the devastating 2010 earthquake.
A Miraculous Healing and a Foundational School
Cheryl's first mission trip to Haiti was truly remarkable. She shared with me the story of trekking to a remote area and, in an act of faith, discarding her asthma medication after a divine prompting. She experienced a miraculous healing and has been free of asthma ever since.
Frontier Projects, a charity co-founded by Jen and Trev Gosling, which has Michael Crossland as their ambassador, and ensures that every cent gets sent directly to the cause. Frontier Projects supports programs in Haiti that focus on education and holistic care for children and their families, addressing food, housing, and educational insecurity. I was particularly moved by their aim to reunite children in orphanages with their families, promoting family unity rather than institutional care.
Unmystifying the Mystic
I asked Cheryl to "unmystify" Christian mysticism, and her definition was beautifully simple: a mystic is "one who communes with God". She believes this is a path accessible to all of humanity, aligning with Jesus' teachings that "the kingdom is within" each individual.
This journey led her to join with Hub Without Borders, a christ-centred mystical group, and hosts of the upcoming Groundswell Conference in Melbourne in August. Cheryl told me the conference is for those who hunger for more of Christ and want to awaken to their divine destiny. The event will feature speakers like Nancy Cohen, Justin Paul Abraham, and Laura C.
I'm incredibly excited about the conference and I encourage you to check out the links and come along if you want to explore more of the amazing wonders that divine life has to offer...
